Brainstorm Blog #2 (Soundscape)

For my Exquisite Corpse Soundscape project, I think I will use entirely industrial sounds. This will include anything electronic, or automotive, such as cars, fans, or blinking lights. Looking at the soundbites so far, it looks like I will have enough content for this idea. Having done musique concrete projects before, I have always liked soundscapes that captured what it's like to be in a city, despite having recorded nowhere near a city. I like how it adds a dystopian feel to it, by making the unnatural sound more natural. With this, I would like to tell a story about the modern age and how everything is so manufactured these days that it has simply become background noise. By choosing only man-made sounds, this idea will be brought to the center, instead of in the background, making people realize how much of this noise we have tuned out. Some edits that I will use to help exaggerate this will likely include repetition, reverb, delay/echo and compression/amplification. Also, I will use effects that utilize similarly industrial ideas, such as sounding like people are speaking through a radio, or phone, or effects that have "futuristic" feelings to them. Overall, the piece will have an arc to it, in which it will start minimal, become more chaotic, then end come down again, in order to represent a feeling of overwhelm. As a musician, I actually look forward to projects like this, because it allows my overworked music theory brain to rest and lets my artistic side take over.
